Platinum Palladium Printing Intensive I: Process & Techniques
Platinum printing is a remarkably stable alternative photographic process capable of producing a monochromatic image that can last for thousands of years. Initially developed in the early 19th century, platinum prints, also known as platinotypes, are popular among artists who value the process’s fine tonal range and reflective quality.
This hands-on course is designed for beginner and/or advanced printers who would like to commit to exploring the art of making fine platinum prints in a long term and intensive course structure. During eight weeks of this program, participants will be invited to compare the differences between the traditional and the sodium platinum printing processes and experiment with additional creative techniques such as toning, layering platinum prints with gum bichromate color pigments, layering platinum with cyanotype emulsion, using various papers, and retouching, among others. How to create successful digital negatives for contact printing and final presentation will also be covered. Maximum print size is limited to 8x10”.
In the second half of the program, students will focus on building upon their practical experience with platinum printing to develop a unique, creative vision for a project or portfolio.
Class time will consist of a mix of instructor presentations and tutorials, group critiques, troubleshooting sessions, and of course plenty of personal printing time in the studio. Students will finish this course with a body of work to be proud of and a thorough understanding of the platinum printing process that allows continued artistic growth.
Beginners to more advanced levels are welcome.
