"What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape?
What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy?"
—"Ode on a Grecian Urn" by John Keats
Since Plato published the Republic, ekphrasis has survived as a form of response for thousands of years. Artists throughout history have used ekphrasis to read between the lines of art, music, literature, and everything in between.
In this Olio, we will briefly discuss and learn about ekphrastic poetry, its origins, its icons, and what it looks like today. With the aid of Jenny Xie's The Rupture Tense, we will think about ekphrasis's relationship to colonialism and how contemporary poets weaponize it against imperialism. Then, in mad pursuit, we will explore the Noguchi Museum, find a work of art to ponder, and write our own ekphrastic poems. The Olio will conclude with a reading of our poems in Socrates Sculpture Park.
