"Wildman" Steve Brill

Teaches at "Wildman" Steve Brill

Naturalist-author "Wildman" Steve Brill is America's go-to guy for foraging. He's been leading foraging tours and providing demos for the public, for schools, day camps, birthday parties, museums, nature centers, parks departments, restaurants and chefs, garden clubs, hiking clubs, teaching farms, nurseries, and other organizations, in parks and natural areas throughout the Greater NY area, since 1982.

He created his own website, Foraging with the "Wildman." His Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (and Not-So-Wild) Places (William Morrow Publishers, 1994) is considered a classic on the subject. His innovative Wild Vegan Cookbook (Harvard Common Press, April, 2002) is changing the way people think of preparing gourmet food. His Shoots and Greens of Early Spring in Northeastern North America (self-published, 1986 and 2008) teaches people how the foraging season begins, and his Foraging with Kids introduces children to the natural world. His Foraging With the "Wildman" DVD is showing people how it's all done, and his iOS/Android app, Wild Edibles, is the best foraging app in America.

But the world-famous environmental educator is still best known for having been handcuffed and arrested by undercover park rangers who infiltrated a tour, for eating a dandelion in Central Park!

The beginning of the event was great. Wildman Drill pointed out some leaves in the playground that was fascinating to learn about. Everyone was able to crowd around him and hear his informative talk. But as the event progressed, we got into narrow areas where everyone was not able to crowd around him. And though he is a very informative person, and I really enjoyed learning from him, I was unable to appreciate the second half of the event because I was unable to hear anything he said. I think I would have enjoyed this event a lot more if instead of having 30+ people and 3 dogs, the group was smaller, like 10-12 people. And if he had a megaphone or some kind of loudspeaker, it would have made it easier to hear him. My wife and I went on a tour up by Fort Tyron Garden. The tour Guide had a megaphone, and we were able to hear every word she said. The tour was very enjoyable, and I recommended it to several friends and family members. Unfortunately, I will not be recommending this event.

This could not have been any better. Mr. Wildman is about as entertaining and informative as any instructor ever. Bring a friend and take a walk around the park eating the edible plants you walk past un-knowingly every day. Make sure to bring water and a lunch unless you want to subsist on gout weed alone! Bring a plastic or paper bag if you want to keep some plants for recipes. We made a great pesto from the greens we collected.

I was greatly looking forward to the class. I got up at 5AM to be sure to leave on time and arrived 15 minutes early at what I thought was the meetup site in front of the Library across from Prospect Park. I had brought Steve's book for him to sign, planned to take photos for an article I am doing on foraging, and hoped to learn a lot. When no one showed up 30 minutes later, I realized I was in the wrong place but had no way to contact Steve. I should have taken Steve's cell phone number with me. Had I done that I could have discovered where the group was. When I emailed Steve later, he explained where the group had met -- which obviously everyone else understood. I don't believe I had received that info earlier. Had I known that, I would have been able to join the group. However, I was misled by the map showing the meeting point at the Library. So, this may have been entirely my mistake. I will check to see if I received the additional info about the meet site. I'm hoping for better luck next time! :-) Neenah

It’s a waste of time. Don’t bother to take this course. It took more than 30 minutes to check in. Then, Mr. Brill spent more than 45 minutes showing us basically was was growing on the mound to the entrance of Forest Park. Slowly we made our way inside the park, when a few meters inside the park, he stood by a tree, across from the bathrooms, to show us some growth or other, and to my horror the people began to pull out these plants to inspect and then carelessly discard them! Then Mr. Brill sat down at a bench in front of the bathroom and announced it was lunchtime! We should all take 30 minutes! Wow! I could not believe it. I just walked away and went home. What did I expect from this course? I expected to take a nice stroll along the many paths, with Mr. Brill explaining to us what we were looking at. I did not expect careless trampling on areas that are not clearly meant to walk on, a total lack of respect of the work it took to make this park beautiful, lush, and green, by pulling out plants, mushrooms, and leaving a tree devoid of its berries! He actually encouraged people to do it, knowing that it was just for close inspection and nothing more. One sees with ones eyes. No need to pull out what is planted. It was just horrible. I will never take another course such as this one again.

Sorry but, one Guide for 75 people had a very limited exposure to topic which as I believe was supposed to have focused on mushrooms but only reviewed 3. Organization and regrouping exhausted much of the time. Guide was prepared but never should have had more than, tops, a dozen in the group. Also meeting area was tio general without any markers or references to meet centraly in a very crowded area.

A few people on our tour loved it so much it was their second or third time. I could see myself doing it again in a few months to discover different plants. Only downside was there were 30 or 40 people participants (likely due to the nice weather), so it was challenging for all of us to fit on some of the paths. Bring a lunch!

"Wildman" Steve Brill and his daughter(?) seemed far more interested in hearing themselves talk than actually provide much information. Instead of being able to forage on our own, we were pulled back into the group to see watercolor paintings of plants or hear renditions of jazz songs played by their hands and mouths. While these talents were interesting in their own right, it's not what we signed up for. We were really interested in the course, but the ratio of ramblings to relevant information was just too high.
