Rosemary Luckett

Teaches at The Art League

A native of Idaho, Rosemary Luckett graduated from Saint Mary College, Leavenworth, KS in 1964.   Since then she has lived in Virginia with her husband and three children while painting, making small collages, and constructing sculptures.  In addition to maintaining a teaching studio in Prince William County , she spent eleven years as a working member of a cooperative in the Torpedo Factory Art Center , Alexandria, VA.  She currently teaches collage and sculpture at the Art League School in Alexandria.

After many years as a painter, Rosemary often uses her small collages and paintings as springboards to larger works assembled from wood and found objects. Small sculptures, life-size figures, and room-size installations all reveal her interest in archetypal representations, mythical stories, gender bias issues and the feminine face of God. Drawing on a base of church altar screens and 20th century surrealism, Rosemary has created several series that are memorable and complex mixed media portraits evoking the histories that inform and anchor our lives.  In early 1998 Sheed & Ward published Crosses and Prayers, her small book of poems and images.

Rosemary’s most recent work is inspired by the natural world and explores relationships between humanity and other living creatures. Ink, watercolor and collages reveal a reality that goes beyond the natural world we perceive, because of the atypical juxtapositions of elements within each composition.  Altars and animals, for instance, or a tree made from a little book. The fun is in trying out unusual combinations of forms and solving the mysteries of the links between them.

Rosemary’s work has been exhibited in many galleries and art centers including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Montpelier Cultural Arts Center , Franz Bader Gallery, Catholic University (Washington, DC), School 33 Art Center (Baltimore, MD), Grounds For Sculpture (Hamilton, NJ), Woman Made Gallery (Chicago), Visions Gallery ( Albany, NY ) and numerous other galleries around the country. She is represented byTouchstone Gallery in Washington, DC .
