Discover Cambridge's rich history and architectural beauty in this Composition in the Field photography workshop. Originally established in 1630 as Newtowne on the north side of the Charles River, Cambridge was designed with an orderly grid of streets in 1631 that remains in use today. Many 18th-century buildings and retaining walls still stand, a testament to the area's preservation and historical significance. In 1636, a field north of town was cleared for Harvard Square, which eventually became the home of this renowned Ivy League institution, though the area was historically known as "Market-place" and "The Village."
This bustling community offers abundant opportunities for environmental portraits, architectural photography, charming urban details, and riverside scenes. Learn panning techniques on the Charles River as crew teams pass by, develop your depth-of-field skills using Harvard Campus archways as subject matter, and capture compelling portraits of street performers you encounter. Throughout the workshop, you will find steeples, columns, old-world street lamps, bridges, and pathways to accessorize your compositions. Your instructor will provide insight into using leading lines and powerful perspectives to tell visual stories.
Each Composition in the Field class begins with an instructional talk from one of our experienced photographers, then you and fellow students explore this photogenic locale during a three-hour session. You will learn to shoot strategically and gain foundational skills that transfer to your personal photography, whether you're traveling, documenting special events, or capturing everyday moments.
