Building upon foundational watercolor skills, this intermediate course offers artists the opportunity to expand their technical capabilities and creative expression. For painters seeking to advance beyond basic techniques, this level class continues the journey where beginner instruction concludes, introducing more sophisticated methods for achieving professional-quality results.
Students master advanced techniques for working with tube watercolors, learning how to create luminous glazes through strategic layering and color juxtaposition. The comprehensive curriculum, developed by instructor Linda, focuses on sophisticated brush handling methods that develop texture, depth, and atmospheric perspective. Through carefully controlled color layering, students discover how to create richer, more saturated hues with greater color complexity than available through direct mixing alone.
The course teaches students to achieve the deeper, more complex color palettes essential for fine art applications. Watercolor's transparency becomes an asset as students learn to manipulate light through the paper surface itself, creating glowing effects impossible to achieve with opaque mediums. These advanced techniques prove particularly valuable for artists interested in creating fine art paintings suitable for gallery exhibition or for commercial applications, including book illustration, advertising design, and editorial illustration work.
Throughout the course, students develop confidence in their ability to handle watercolor's unique challenges, including managing water saturation levels, understanding pigment properties, and working with the medium's characteristic fluidity. The instructor guides students through systematic exercises that build competence in difficult areas like preserving whites, creating atmospheric effects, and achieving controlled color transitions.
