Develop the ability to photograph the profound emotional connections that exist between dogs and the people who love them.
During this Safari experience, you will develop your skills in photographing the powerful and deeply meaningful bonds between canines and their human companions. You will work with at least two model dogs and their owners in the beautiful Bon Air Rose Garden setting in Arlington, VA. (https://www.arlingtonva.us/Government/Departments/Parks-Recreation/Locations/Parks/Bon-Air-Park). Shooting during early morning hours will give you excellent conditions to practice adjusting your portraiture camera settings in soft, flattering light. You will practice and master the techniques of organizing and directing "The Models."
Initially, you will learn and apply composition and lighting principles to create compelling dog portraits showcasing the complete body, including tails and paws, head and shoulder shots, and intimate close-up headshots, all while emphasizing the dog's expressive eyes. The dog's individual personality will emerge as you utilize treats and auditory stimulation alongside the owner's encouragement.
You will then progress to learning and practicing portraiture techniques that capture amusing and emotionally resonant moments shared between dogs and their people. You will explore various poses and interactions, including The Cuddle, Look Up, Kisses, My Formal Portrait, Playtime, Strolling Together, Over the Shoulder, and additional creative compositions.
To obtain the best possible images, we will position dogs and people in shaded areas or create shade using a reflector provided by the instructor. For optimal angles and compositional perspective, we will move to ground level alongside the dogs and also position ourselves above them using a small stepladder provided by the instructor. For safety and control, all dogs will remain leashed throughout the session; any visible leashes can be removed during post-processing editing.
