Few places in Washington, DC, offer a richer photographic environment than the U Street and Shaw neighborhoods, with their vibrant murals, layered architecture, and character-filled residential streets. Join us as we explore some of the city's most visually dynamic and storied blocks.
We will begin in the photogenic and arts-forward Blagden Alley, home to the DC Alley Museum, before wandering through the vibrant Shaw area and wrapping up near 15th and U Street.
Throughout the walk, you will receive guidance on building strong compositions through an architectural photography lens, using buildings, murals, and the surrounding environment as central elements of your visual storytelling.
Topics include:
- Framing murals effectively within their surroundings
- Finding creative and unexpected angles
- Playing with scale and perspective
- Exploring the quality and direction of available light
- Composing with bold shadows and graphic shapes
- Telling stories in context: the art, the architecture, and the neighborhood as a whole
Come prepared to experiment with fresh, expressive approaches to urban photography in one of DC's most visually alive neighborhoods!
Any camera works for this workshop, including DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and smartphones.
