Car photography workshops are rewarding, but a photography workshop at Old Car City in White, Georgia, a landmark site in operation since 1931, takes the experience to another level entirely. This wonderfully time-forgotten destination, part woodland park and part automotive graveyard, evokes both a Stephen King film set and a Willy Wonka fever dream depending on how you choose to see it. It is well worth the roughly one-hour drive from Atlanta, and the $30 entry fee covers your access and your right to photograph everything you encounter.
Picture more than 30 acres of lush southern landscape woven together with approximately 4,000 cars, trucks, and vans, some dating to the Art Deco era and beyond. Your instructor will demonstrate and supervise lessons in capturing a wide variety of textures, moods, and atmospheric qualities. You will explore multiple aperture control strategies, each producing a distinctly different visual result, and you are encouraged to try them all.
Consider the range of possibilities: a century-old rusted Ford Edsel, a gleaming hood ornament on a Lincoln Continental once owned by Elvis, a VW bus permanently swallowed by a cascade of undulating vines that might have carried devotees to Woodstock. Every corner of Old Car City tells a different story.
Whether you favor macro close-ups, wide-angle sweeps, telephoto compression, high-angle shots, eye-level compositions, or dramatic ground-level perspectives, you will have total freedom to explore while your instructor remains available to advise and collaborate. You will leave with a collection of portfolio-worthy images suited for display on living room or office walls, a compelling mix of cars, flowers, brickwork, dead trees, living trees, mannequins, painted signs, moody skies, and whatever else catches your eye along the way.
Meet at 3098 HWY 411 NE, White, GA 30184
Bring your camera.
Each Composition in the Field class begins with a brief instructor-led talk, followed by a guided walk through one of the many photogenic locations across more than 20 cities in the DPA network. Subject matter includes street scenes, architectural interiors, farmers' markets, zoos, landscapes, and more. Sample images from both students and instructors across various venues and cities throughout the US and Canada are included.
You will spend three hours shooting strategically, come away with more interesting and intentional photographs, and build a practical foundation for improving your eye wherever your camera goes next.
