During your first class session, you will meet your instructor, who will introduce you to our facility procedures and then begin working with clay immediately. You will receive 12.5 pounds of clay to use throughout the course. Any additional clay beyond this amount must be purchased separately.
What you will learn:
- Session 1: Introduction to the facility and fundamental wheel throwing basics
- Session 2: Trimming techniques and bisque firing review
- Session 3: Additional throwing and shaping techniques
- Session 4: Glazing application and "Cookie" basics
The first session focuses on centering techniques and creating simple forms such as cylinders on the potter's wheel.
In the second session, you will learn how to trim the pieces you created in the first session. You will continue throwing additional pieces to expand your portfolio of work.
In the third session, you will develop additional throwing and trimming techniques. Please be aware that this is the last session during which you are allowed to throw new pieces. Any pieces created after this session will not be fired.
In the fourth session, you will learn proper glazing techniques for your bisque-fired pieces. All your pieces should be ready for glazing on this final day.
You must be 18 years or older to sign up for this class independently. Students aged 14 to 17 are welcome with an accompanying adult member or student.
Important Notes:
- Please arrive approximately 10 to 15 minutes early to allow time for setup
- Wear casual, comfortable clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. The clay we use washes out of fabric with regular laundering, but some glazes and other materials may be less forgiving
- If you have an apron, please bring it along with a towel for cleanup
- Trim your fingernails before class. Long fingernails make throwing on the wheel and shaping clay significantly more difficult, and we want you to work with ease and get the most from your experience
- Remove all jewelry, including rings, watches, and bracelets, as these can get in the way when working with clay and are best left at home
- If you have long hair, bring an elastic or hair tie to secure it. This is crucial for safety when working near the spinning wheel
