For the beginner through expert artist, this course delves into the dynamic art form of collage. Besides obvious influencers like Picasso and Matisse, collage can be explored just as effectively through music (Hip Hop, probably most directly) and technological advances like the Xerox copier or digital camera. Artist and themes are discussed near the beginning of each class, and the remainder is spent honing a personalized visual language. Texture, rhythm, and color play a part- but there is so much more.
HIGHLY SUGGESTED MATERIALS:
A sketchpad; pencil; a transparent, medium bodied matte medium; palette paper or wax paper; a few
different brushes; decent scissors; X-Acto knife with #11 blade; tacky glue or thicker fabric glue; some
smaller sized gessoed (primed) boards or loose (not stretched) gessoed canvas (can be bought by the
yard, or in tablets); metal ruler (preferably 18” with a lip), a cutting mat (preferably “self-healing” and
with a grid); some magazines
OTHER MATERIALS:
sand, caulk and caulk gun, charcoal, colored pencils, eraser, canvas board, acrylic paints, a small a packet
of quality colored paper, gloss medium, gesso (and boards and other surfaces to gesso), fabrics, yarn
and string, old newspapers or magazines
Don’t go overboard! Too many materials easily clutter your
brain, apartment, and art.
