What you'll learn in this ring class:

Create a set of sterling silver rings for yourself or someone else. Learn the basic jewelry fabrication techniques, like how to saw, file, and texture your ring with hammers. Learn soldering techniques using a torch flame.

Choose high polished, or create an oxidized look, or a brushed finish in the metal. A great introduction to the jewelry metals studio – everything you need is provided.

Students should wear clothing that they don't mind getting a little messy (you most likely won't get dirty in class but just in case). Students are encouraged to bring a notebook and pencil, their ideas and some sketches.

Please Note: Tools & materials are included in the class fee.

Question from Anonymous
Hi, I have a sapphire 5mm stone I want to set in a custom 14k ring. Can I purchase extra materials in the class?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
In the ring making description, the class is working in sterling silver and making a ring - students can make one wider band or sometimes two thin bands in the workshop time frame. There is no room for additional instruction and time needed to work in different materials (14 karat gold and especially building a stone setting will require a bit more time, a variation on techniques, different soldering and personal instruction separate from the rest of the class). Stone setting and construction is an intermediate level skill to start.
Question from Anonymous
This class is making a set of rings. Meaning 2 rings? Can I and my husband both work on the 1 seat?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! In the Ring Making Intensive, each person makes a sterling silver ring - with a choice of hammer texture, oxidized, brushed or high-polish finish. Most students make a pair of thin bands (as time allows), but some opt to make a single wider band instead. So each person leaves with at least one finished ring, and often two - depending on the choice of their choice of width of the band. Wider bands take longer to fabricate.
Question from Linette S.
Can we use gold instead of silver?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Linette! No, this class will not be able to work with gold. Thanks!
Question from anonymous
Will we be learning stamping in this class?
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! In this class you will learn to make a sterling silver ring from start to finish - you will be learning to make the correct size, how to form a ring band, soldering, and polishing. You will be looking at options for high polish, brushed finish, as well as hammer texturing and oxidizing to create an alternative antique look.
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! The school is not sure what do you mean by "stamping" but they are guessing that you might just mean using letter and number stamps? They do have a basic set, it is optional if students want to use them. Jewelry stamping, however - as in used widely in Native American jewelry, they will not be delving into in this workshop.

Question from Anonymous
Can we bring scrap gold and make gold rings instead of silver?
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! No, this class we will not be able to work with gold. The school offers a special workshop for students who want to make a gold ring. You can contact the school to schedule if you would like to! Alternatively, the silver ring making is great warm up and practice for making rings, many people do this before booking a private session to get a feel for working in the studio and using the tools and experimenting with design. Hope this helps!
Question from Anonymous
Is it one class or a series of classes?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi! This is a 1-day class only. Thanks!
Question from Camila
Hello, I want to make my wedding ring. Shall I bring the gold to the class? What do I need? What kind of gold, how much, where I can find it?
Answer from Jenn C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi! The school actually has a Gold Ring Intensive class coming up that you can register for. Once registered you'll need to contact the school so they can buy your gold.
Question from Susan C.
Hi! What types of tools are provided for the class and can we keep them afterwards?
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hey Susan, the provider said that the tools are provided in class but if you want a basic toolkit they can provide a list for you to buy and you can keep the sterling silver that you will make in class.
