Class Description

Description

This three-week intensive course develops your skills in composing and framing images that effectively communicate your artistic vision. You will learn and practice useful composition guidelines that both support your creative expression and help you develop a deliberate approach to analyzing scenes before photographing them. The course presents visual examples of composition principles used by renowned photographers, inspiring you to apply professional techniques in your own work.

Beyond passive learning, you will nurture your creative eye through visual study and analysis. After reviewing examples and gathering inspiration, you will practice photography in nearby locations during class, receiving immediate constructive feedback from the instructor. This real-time guidance helps you understand what works successfully in your compositions and what might be improved or reconsidered in future shots.

What you will learn:

  • Exploring your subject: Capturing the image you envision often requires trying multiple approaches and angles. You will develop various techniques for photographing your subject from different perspectives and discovering unexpected opportunities within a single scene.
  • Composition rules and when to break them: Numerous composition guidelines exist, from the rule of thirds to more advanced concepts. This course teaches fundamental principles we find most effective, while also encouraging thoughtful rule-breaking when artistic intent supports it.
  • Learning through active practice: Photography is best learned through doing. This course emphasizes extensive hands-on practice, enabling you to immediately apply concepts and build confidence in your compositional choices.

Prerequisite: Photography I or equivalent foundational experience
