Our one-week Tween Acting Camp is a focused, high-energy deep dive into the craft of acting for students who are ready to do serious creative work in a supportive and stimulating environment. The curriculum builds week over week in complexity and depth, and no two sessions are exactly alike, making this camp worth returning to again and again.
The Camp Explores:
- Ensemble building and the skills that make collaborative performance possible
- Improvisation techniques and how spontaneity strengthens prepared work
- Script analysis: understanding what a scene is actually about beneath the surface of the dialogue
- Scene study with a focus on truthful, specific, and active choices
- Introduction to The Barrow Group's distinctive acting tools, the same ones used by professional adult performers at the school
- Rehearsal strategies and performance preparation habits
Each student works in a pair on a scene from a contemporary play. As the week progresses, students bring their scenes to increasing levels of specificity and performance readiness. The week culminates in a showing for friends and family to attend, giving students a meaningful and memorable opportunity to share the work they have built together.
An important component of the tween camp is the development of observation skills. Students are expected to watch their classmates work and offer objective, specific feedback based on what they observed changing after an adjustment is made. This practice of attentive, articulate observation is central to The Barrow Group's teaching methodology and directly strengthens a student's own acting instincts and self-awareness.
This camp teaches The Barrow Group's specific approach to storytelling and performance, rooted in the conviction that acting is fundamentally a form of play. Students learn most effectively when the environment feels simultaneously challenging and safe, and every aspect of the camp experience is designed with that balance in mind.
What distinguishes The Barrow Group School from many other acting studios in New York City is the depth of training behind every instructor. All teachers have completed the school's intensive, multi-year teacher training program, meaning they are not simply teaching from personal performance experience but from a deep, structured understanding of the methodology your child is learning.
Lunch and Logistics: The lunch break runs from 12:30 to 1:15 pm. Tween students remain on-site during lunch and should bring their own food or arrange for delivery. Tweens do not have the option to leave the premises during the break. A detailed syllabus and additional logistical information will be sent to families two to three weeks before the camp start date.
