Students of all levels of experience will create small scale, portrait studies in clay using other students in the room as a model or provided example to copy from as a reference. Along the way students will gain a better appreciation for basic sculpture skills and for the anatomical relationships within the head. This was a fantastic class. James was incredible. He started the class off by giving us a tour of his studio where some of his other students were working which allowed us to be immersed in mind and body in the craft of portraits in different modes. He was available and present with the lesson which felt intimate and extraterrestrial at the same time. His words were incredibly uplifting and his instruction showed how firmness meets flexibility in the craft of one's self. I would highly recommend this class for anyone who feels that there is something burgeoning inside them that needs a guide to come through. James is both an instructor of the art of sculpting clay as well as one's own vision for themselves. 10/10 would recommend and will very likely work with James again. -

Painting from Life: Alla Prime was my first live painting class in over 4 years, so I was a little intimidated to start and wasn't sure if I would receive the level of guidance I probably needed from being a little rusty. Despite their being 6 other members in the class, the teacher sat with me throughout the beginning and walked me through color theory, mixing instructions, and even layering techniques. It was super personable and fun, the other class members were also happy to provide some advice and everyone was really nice! Would definitely take it again. -

Wednesday Night Painting Class
I've barely picked up a pencil in the last 30+ years, so it was both thrilling and somewhat intimidating to step into Brandon Soloff's cramped, atmospheric studio on W 26 St., surrounded by the trappings of Serious Art, alongside a small group of students who simply towered over me in terms of ability. The students were welcoming, the atmospherics were ideal (NPR quietly murmuring in the background) and Brandon's instructions were as deft and light as my sketching was heavy and lumbering. Best of all, Brandon let me make mistakes before providing guidance on how and where to correct, which made this a useful learning experience. I'd definitely recommend this class and, schedule permitting, I will return.
