Some of the more notable photographic essays of Life Magazine were produced by master photo journalist W. Eugene Smith. He photographed the battle at Iwo Jima and Leyte, where fighting was so fierce that medics were ordered to wear side arms. After the war he photographed, Country Doctor, Nurse Midwife and Welsh Miners. Smith drove himself hard and after an emotional crisis receded into his loft. The loft sponsored Jazz rehearsals and famous people showed up. Norman Mailer, Diane Arbus, and Thelonius Monk, to name a few. Musicologist Hall Overtone was there, and Smith was there to photograph the scene.
In Smith we see the artists struggle to reconcile one’s personal and commercial work. There will be a power point presentation and discussion.
