Photo Safari: Central Park
My lesson was an amazing experience, all thanks to the awesome photography instructor I had the great pleasure of meeting, Zim! It was a stroke of luck that I was the only student this particular day and ended up (not intentionally) having a private lesson with an incredibly knowledgeable photography teacher. Zim immediately assessed my beginner needs and proceeded to instruct me on the basics of my camera and beginning photographic skills and techniques which is precisely the information I needed. I cannot say enough how fantastic an experience this was for me, A private lesson for 2 hours from a knowledgeable instructor- I learned so much and was so extremely appreciative of this time spent. I hope to become a better photographer as a result of Zim's excellent teaching, advice and recommendations ! -
Photo Safari: Central Park

Photo Safari: Central Park
I have tried to learn photography skills from a number of sources and found Zim's approach to be most effective. She has a great combination of talents: extremely knowledgeable, listens well to what you want to learn, teaches in a way that you learn and won't forget. -
Location Photography Workshop: Chinatown
I thought Marla offered a great mix of both the art and science of photography. She guided me to improve my "eye" so I could more quickly see potential shots, and also helped me better appreciate how to shutter speed and aperture to my advantage. I appreciate that she took the time to understand what my photographic style is, and helped me to improve that, rather than trying to get me to photograph in a traditionally "perfect" way. I also appreciated that she took the time to help me better understand my camera controls - even Googling to help me figure out some buttons that I should have known myself. -
Location Photography Workshop: Chinatown
Marla was great. I learned a lot and came away very encouraged about continuing to learn more. Thanks. -
Location Photography Workshop: Chinatown
Thanks Marla for a great class ! -
Photo Safari: Central Park
Great class! Zim is able to make this class fun even when the class has varying levels of photography skills. Although it’s a group setting she still gives individual attention and advice. This was very helpful for me since I was just trying understand my camera a little better. While some of the more advanced people had other goals. I am really glad I took this class. I would definitely recommend it. -

Instructor Marla Mossman was terrific, and offered helpful advice on both the technical aspects of operating my DSLR as well as scouting interesting subjects and locations for street photography. She did a wonderful job tailoring the workshop to my skill level and background. -

Location Photography Workshop: Chinatown
I loved it! Looking forward to meeting with this wonderful woman again. At first, I didn't realize that I was the only student (That being said I'm the only crazy one who decided to go out shooting mid winter in the frost) but nonetheless the professor showed up, taught me things that I didn't know about my own camera, was very personal, professional, kind and wise. Also is a great photographer and has some guts when it comes to asking people for pictures with street photography. Thank you a million times over! -
Museum Inside Out
Zim was amazing - patient and enthusiastic. Learned a great deal - I'm a beginner. -
Location Photography Workshop: Chinatown
Being prepared for the decisive moment has always been an issue for me. Marla taught me how to prep beforehand by scouting a location, helping me decide which manual settings would work best for the scene, and most of all, to be patient as we waited for photo opportunities. Thank you for your advice and guidance. -

Photo Safari: Central Park
I took this exact class last year when I was in town and enjoyed it so much, I took it again with the same instructor: Zim. The class size was small, which was a plus, but it was Zim's style of teaching that hooked me. She kept the information at my level so that I didn't get either overwhelmed or bored. She took extra time to show me specifics of using my camera, how to get a good shot, and more. Bonus- she's just the nicest person! Hope to take her class again- either this one or another one that is offered. Thanks, Zim! -
NYC the UPshot
Zim is a super fun instructor! Definitely recommend taking her classes! -
Fascinating Areas of Manhattan Workshop: Chinatown
Marla's workshop was wonderful! She was so nice and Chinatown was full of great subjects for shooting. I am pretty comfortable with the technical aspects of DSLR and wanted to start focusing on not just taking a technically sound picture, but pictures that capture the "mood" or "atmosphere" of the place and/or people I am shooting. I couldn't have picked a better person to help me work toward this goal! Marla has a background in street photography and really helped me to start thinking like a photographer. We concentrated on how to anticipate being ready for a "moment" in a place like NYC- for example, managing the light conditions that can go from a dark shadow of a building to bright light quickly. She also impressed on me how to anticipate the movement of a subject, the importance of thinking ahead of where you would want that subject to ideally be, and then how to position yourself to achieve that shot. I left feeling that I could create a much better urban street scene shot after her class! Highly recommend! -
